Understand “Candidate” through Etymology

The Etymology of “Candidate”

Roman politicians used to be very careful while managing their image. Especially while running a campaign, these politicians used to get their togas to be extra white. This helped them cast the impression of being spotless and respect-worthy.

These “white-wearing” politicians were called “candidates”. Notice the connection with “candid“, and “incandescent“?

Over time, the word “candidate” has evolved to develop the connotation of “aspirant“.
