Cognitive basis

Cognitive basis

Rote learning is meaningless
and harmful.
It leads to a disorganised
and cluttered mind.

Cognitive basis

Etymology
(Greek: “etym-” – origin, truth;
“-ology” – study of)
is the
study of word origins.
Etymology helps students to see
essential connections between
words, thereby making a
significant enhancement in
their language comprehension,
memorisation, and recall
abilities

Cognitive basis
The need for Etymology Education derived its
justification from the concept of chunking.
There are more than 1 million words in English,
and it is quite sensless to study words one-by-one.
Etymology helps learners to create memory chunks.
This creates a sophisticated cognitive organisation
for what is learnt. Hence, knowledge organisation
starts to resemble a well-indexed library.
